Huntington Beach, Calif., September 22, 2006 – On October 14, 2006, at 2 p.m., the world's most prestigious surfing contest, the 2006 Lost Energy Drink ISA World Surfing Games, will officially kick off with the colorful "Parade of Nations" followed by the traditional "Sands of the World" ceremony. Teams from 33 countries including: Argentina, Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Ecuador, Tahiti, United Kingdom, Aruba, United States, Sweden, Panama, Hawaii, Cote d’Ivoire and Venezuela will participate in the symbolic parade and sand ceremony. Both ceremonies will be a visual and emotional beginning to the nine-day contest similar to the Olympic opening ceremony.

During the “Parade of Nations,” teams will march in alphabetical order by country down the Huntington Beach Pier proudly touting their nation's flag and wearing their national colors. The teams will then pass over the contest site convening for the emblematic “Sands of the World” ceremony. In this ceremony, each team will pour sand brought from their respective country into a specially crafted acrylic box. All of the sand will be combined in a ceremonious display of unity, brotherhood and respect for the ocean. The significance of the ceremony, a tradition pioneered by ISA president Fernando Aguerre in the 1996 World Games, is paramount to the ISA's hopes for a peaceful world and continued spirit of community throughout the sport of surfing. The ceremony will also feature welcoming speeches by Dave Sullivan, mayor of Huntington Beach as well as event hosts Mike Gerard and Fernando Aguerre.
