Newport Beach, Calif.September 22, 2006Challenging conditions and stiff competition were no match for Dustin Cuizon (Ewa Beach, HAW) at day four of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) two-star 2006 Newport Beach Pro Presented by Jeep. Cuizon took down his fellow competitors and advanced to the quarter-finals, moving himself one step closer to the Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep title and the $33,333 prize purse. The ASP Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior also got under way today with 48 of the top professional junior competitors battling it out for vital points toward a coveted spot in the Billabong Pro Junior World Championships.

A strong south wind generated choppy inconsistent wave conditions making it challenging for surfers to find clean faces, but stand-out competitors Dane Reynolds (Ventura, CA), Adam Virs (Ventura, CA), Mike Todd (Laguna Beach, CA) and Cuizon made the best of the unkind situation and successfully advancing to Saturday's quarter-finals. "I just try to focus on one heat at a time and hopefully I'll make it to the final. I'm just trying not to fumble the ball along the way," said Cuizon, who will surf at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow morning against the 2005 Newport Classic winner Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA).

Curran, not ready to relinquish his title, fought off a sore ankle and three other competitors and took first in his heat. "I'm using a board that I ride in all conditions, so that helps," said Curran. "I want a repeat; I hope I get it... I want the win!" In that same highly contested heat, Anthony Petruso (Malibu, CA), needing a score of 2.7, snuck by Alex Gray in the last two minutes with a 3.0, securing a spot in the next round.

In the Oakley Pro Junior, Gray, rebounding from his WQS elimination, was able to put together a 7.0 and 6.25 which was just enough to advance. Joining Gray in the quarter-finals are Sterling Spencer (Gulf Breeze, FL), Killian Garland (Orcutt, CA), Chris Ropero (Jacksonville Beach, FL), Torrey Meister (North Shore, HAW), Chris Broman (Huntington Beach, CA) and Nick Rosza (Oxnard, CA). In one of the biggest upsets of the event, New Smyrna Beach surfer and current ASP North America Junior Pro points leader, Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL) was unable to generate wave scores high enough to move on in the Oakley Pro Junior, but will surf in the Newport Beach Pro quarter-finals. Hawaiian native Casey Brown is the only competitor left in both the Newport Beach Pro and the Oakley Pro Junior.

Each of these under 20 year old surfers is vying for needed points toward the current junior professional rankings. With only the Oakley Pro Junior National Championships at the O'Neill Cold Water Classic remaining, a top finish at this contest is imperative if they want to qualify for the World Junior Championships.

The Newport Beach Pro presented by Jeep and the Oakley Pro Junior will commence Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the quarters of both events. Live scoring and press updates of both events are available at www.newportbeachpro.com and www.surfermag.com/events/oakleyjr06.

On Saturday September 23, Amp'd Mobile will broadcast the quarter-final rounds of the Newport Beach Pro and the Oakley Pro Junior live to Amp'd Mobile phones. Please visit www.ampd.com for more information.
The Newport Pro is the second stop on the Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep. The Trifecta was formed in 2005 as part of a three-year plan to strengthen surfing in America by uniting the Body Glove Surfbout presented by Adio, the Newport Pro presented by Jeep and the O'Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep under one banner. The Trifecta will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer that takes first-place in all three events. Should no one surfer take the win in all three events, the Trifecta also awards an overall points-winner bonus of $10,000.
