NO FEAR MEXICAN SURF FIESTA PRESENTED BY SOBE
San Miguel, Mexico
October 13-15, 2006
TENACITY AND TRIUMPH AT DAY TWO OF NO FEAR MEXICAN SURF FIESTA
SAN MIGUEL, Mexico (Saturday, October 14, 2006) – Following a morning postponement due to dismal surf conditions, round two of the No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta presented by Sobe got underway at 10:45 AM.
Kicking off in 1-2 foot wind swell at San Miguel, Mexico, the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) two-star event successfully completed 13 heats of round two today.
Both surfers and event organizers were rewarded for their determination this morning as the call to proceed garnered them the best conditions of the event so far despite a general morning consensus that today’s action would most likely not commence.
Mason Ho (North Shore, Haw.) erased any lingering doubts about the contestability of the conditions in the second heat of the day posting the event-high single-wave score of a 9.47 out of a possible 10. The prodigious natural-footer opened up with a series of lightning-quick slashed on a searing righthander before punctuating the wave with an impressive 360 aerial maneuver.
“It’s still pretty difficult out there, but every now and then, you’ll get five or 10 minutes where there are a few waves,” Ho said. “Our heat had a few waves and the tide during my heat was just right for there to be some ramps out there.”
The No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta is truly an international event attracting ASP competitors from Australia, Trinidad, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, mainland Mexico and all over the United States.
Corey Garcia (Byron Bay, Aust.), Chris Dennis (Trinidad) and Angelo Lozano (Baja California, Mex.) are three of the surviving international competitors advancing into round three today.
With one day left to complete 31 heats, as well as the forecast for a drop in swell, it is unlikely that this year’s event will crown a champion.
Event organizers will meet tomorrow morning at 7:15 am to assess conditions and decide how to proceed.
