ASSOCIATION OF SURFING PROFESSIONALS (ASP) NORTH AMERICANEWPORT PRO PRESENTED BY JEEPNewport Beach, CA
 August 31, 2006
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (August 31, 2006) – Newport Beach welcomes some of professional surfing’s brightest stars to the Newport Pro presented by Jeep. This Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) two-star event taking place Sept 19-24, 2006 also serves as the pivotal second stop on the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep. In addition to this World Qualifying Series (WQS) contest, Newport’s 54th Street Break will also host the ASP Grade Two Oakley Pro Junior and the 18th Annual Newport Beach Surf Championships. Body Glove Surfbout winner Dustin Cuizon (HAW), currently ranked 26 on the WQS tour, leads the ratings in the Macy’s CA Trifecta Surf Series. With a win at the Newport Pro, Cuizon will be one step closer to becoming the first-ever Macy’s CA Trifecta Surf Series Champion. The Trifecta will award Cuizon a $33,333 bonus if he takes first-place in all three events. Should he not take the win in all three events, the Trifecta, in association with Action Sports Group (ASG) and the ASP, also awards an overall points-winner bonus of $10,000, a second-place bonus of $3,500 and a third-place bonus of $1,500. Wrapped around Newport Beach’s Centennial Celebration, the Newport Pro features 160 top level professional surfers, a field of 48 junior competitors as well as 144 amateur participants. The Newport Pro not only displays some of the WQS premier surfers, but also provides the community with a chance to explore and celebrate Newport Beach’s surfing heritage.	The Newport Pro has a rich history of providing excellent amateur and professional competition. Past events have attracted some of the biggest names in surfing such as three-time ASP World Champ Andy Irons (HAW) and World Tour stalwart Taylor Knox (CA), while also supporting a strong draw of local competitors. Although the contest continues to attract numerous professional competitors, the amateur division remains an essential part of surfing’s growth and evolution, as up-and-coming stars and local heroes are given the chance to stand-out and prove themselves in their own backyard. The 18th Annual Newport Beach Surf Championships, hosted by the City of Newport Beach, awards a collection of prizes valued at $5,000. The competition focuses on the sport of surfing in the community and is open to competitors of diverse ages and abilities. Divisions include the following: Elementary; Middle School; High School; College Men’s; Men’s, Masters; Legends and Girls. The contest commences on Saturday September 23, with College Men’s, Legends and Masters preliminary rounds, and High School, Men’s, Middle School, Elementary and Girls heats; and all subsequent rounds, semifinals and finals will take place Sunday, September 24.As a part of the ASP North American tour, the 2006 Newport Pro is supported by Jeep Brand, Oakley Eyewear, Macy’s West, Amp’d Mobile and Jack’s.
