LOCALS DOMINATE GREAT WAVES AT DAY ONE OF THE ROXY JAM CARDIFF

Roxy Jam Cardiff Credit ASPCARDIFF, Calif. (Saturday, September 23, 2006) – The sun was shining and the waves were crisp for day one of North America’s first ever Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned women’s longboard event, the Roxy Jam Cardiff. Running September 23-24, 2006, Roxy Jam Cardiff offers the ideal platform to showcase the incredible caliber of female longboard surfing.

Rounds one through three were completed today.

Cori Schumacher (Carlsbad, Calif.) cross-stepped her way to the day’s second-highest heat total of a 14.75 out of a possible 20 (the highest went to Amy Murphee who was eliminated in the Round of 64). Utilizing her local knowledge, the veteran competitor made quick work of her fellow surfers in the difficult low tide conditions.

“The tide is dropping fairly low right now but it’s still lining up on the rights and that’s what I focused on,” Schumacher said. “This is my home break and I surf it all the time so I feel really comfortable out here.”

Schumacher will have her work cut out for her tomorrow as she faces off against reigning ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion Schuyler McFerran (Encinitas, Calif.) and the competitively-decorated Daize Shayne (Encinitas, Calif.).

“I’m not going to change anything,” Schumacher said of her heat strategy. “I’m just going to go out there and do what I always do and hopefully the waves come my way.”

Holly Beck (Encinitas, Calif.), current No. 18 on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) shortboard tour, glided and carved her way through the competition today in her first professional longboard event.

“I’ve been competing in a few amateur longboard events, but this is my first professional one,” Beck said. “I love all types of surfing and riding different equipment. I’m stoked on this event. I think there should be a longboard event with every WQS event.”

Beck, who has been a standout in ASP shortboard competitions for the past few years, used her aggressive competitive background to advance through two rounds of competition today.

“The vibe at this event is totally different to the WQS events,” Beck said. “All the girls here are super mellow and cruisey and you wouldn’t find that at a shortboard event. I guess my background is a little more aggressive out there and it seems to be working to my advantage for sure.”

Tasia Jones (Carlsbad, Calif.) looked at ease today despite being absent from competition for several months.

“I was really nervous going into this event,” Jones said. “I haven’t competed in a while so I was a little rusty but once I got the first few waves under my belt I felt pretty good.”

One of several locals competing in the event, Jones used her extensive experience at the break to her advantage.

“We had lots of events here when I went to Carlsbad High School,” Jones said. “I was fortunate enough to come in first my last two years there so I know this wave pretty well.

Tomorrow will see top seeded surfers such as Kassia Meador (Oceanside, Calif.), current champ McFerran and former champ Shayne hit the water for the Round of 32 at 7:00 am.
