ZIPPERS, Los Cabos/Mexico (Friday, June 21, 2013) - The ASP 6-Star Los Cabos Open of Surf saw the event’s top performers take to the water today, completing the Round of 24 in clean two-to-four foot waves at Zippers.

Stop No. 2 of 4 on the ASP North America Series, the inaugural Los Cabos Open of Surf is the biggest ASP event in Mexican history and the event has seen some amazing performances from some world-class talent.

Ezekiel Lau (HAW), 19, built momentum from yesterday’s Round 3 victory, igniting the Zippers lineup with a flurry of powerful hacks and committed airs to power past Europeans Vicente Romero (ESP), 19, and former ASP World Junior Champion Maxime Huscenot (FRA), 21, with the day’s high heat total of 16.67 out of 20.

“I was just having fun out there,” Lau said. “I told myself not to worry about too much and just go out there and catch waves. I was able to let loose after my first two good scores and everyone wants to do airs, so I ended up having fun.”

Heitor Alves (BRA), 31, remained consistent at the Los Cabos Open of Surf, nearly earning the day’s high-heat total for the third consecutive day. Alves has combined impeccable wave selection with surgical execution throughout the rounds and hopes to continue his form in the business end of the event.

“That was another good heat for me and I’m enjoying the waves here in Cabo,” Alves said. “I’m trying to be patient and wait for the best waves and so far my strategy is working. Hopefully I can have another good heat tomorrow.”

Jack Freestone (AUS), 21, two-time ASP World Junior Champion, displayed incredible versatility on his forehand today, donating a series of striking combinations on the rights of Zippers while moving to the Round of 16.

“It felt good to get some good set waves at the end of that heat,” Freestone said. “This wave is tricky to surf and if you’re on the right ones I think you’re going to get the decent scores. Everytime I go out for a freesurf or a heat I’m still figuring out new things to this wave. I’m trying to take it all in and take it to the next heat.”

Freestone, a 2014 ASP WCT hopeful, has yet to find a big result this season and is out to have a breakout performance at the Los Cabos Open of Surf.

“This is an important event since there aren’t many 6-Stars and I always go in to every event looking for a big result,” Freestone said. “I definitely want to do well here. I’ve had a bad start to the year and I want to find my feet here.”

Stu Kennedy (AUS), 23, a standout in Round 3 yesterday, continued to build momentum at the Los Cabos Open of Surf, taking a Round of 24 heat win with electric forehand surfing at Zippers. Kennedy got off to a slow start in his match-up against Beyrick De Vries (ZAF), 20, and Granger Larsen (HAW), 23, but eventually earned a convincing heat win with a 15.74 out of 20 heat total.

“Taking your momentum out there is really crucial,” Kennedy said. “You’ve got to be on your game to make it to the next section and I’ve got some good boards right now. I kind of cringe when I have to surf three and four man heats so I’m really happy to make it to the round with priority.”
