Billabong Pro Maui Surf Contest Headlines

COORDINATES: 21º 01' N

ATTITUDE: The season ending event is perpetually revered as it offers one of the best waves on tour as well as the last crack at tour points. It's not uncommon to see titles won and lost at Honolua, and the surfers all raise their competitive game to meet the powerful righthanders in fine form.

THE WAVE: A clearwater, powerful righthander that breaks against the beautiful backdrop of Honolua Bay. The bottom is a combination of rock, sand, and coral, and the waves hold their form between 3 to 12 feet and beyond.

PERKS: Gorgeous barreling righthanders against a picturesque backdrop…what more could you want?

PERILS: The waves can be deceptively heavy here, and trips to the bottom are not uncommon. The locals are fiercely protective of the spot, so show your respect. Occasionally a little sharky as well, but don't let that put you off!

APRES SURF: Although not as renowned as Oahu, the island of Maui offers world-class surf without the crowds. You can get away from Honolua and explore other breaks, or just enjoy all the natural beauty that the island has to offer. A true world class travel destination that just happens to have some great surf.

ASP WOMEN'S WORLD TOUR HISTORY: The Billabong event at Honolua has been the culmination of the ASP Women's World Tour since 2002.

NOTABLE: Reigning ASP Women's World Champion Stephanie Gilmore sealed her title at Honolua Bay on two separate occasions and watch in 2009 for a third. Former ASP Women's World Champion Chelsea Hedges has also dominated the competition here in recent years with back-to-back victories in 2004 and 2005.
