HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Saturday, February 11, 2012) – Julian Wilson (AUS), 23, has been a major player on the international surf stage since his debut in Quiksilver’s “Young Guns II” in 2006. The interim five years bore witness to the Sunshine Coast’s golden natural-footer ascending the professional ranks, release an award-winning profile video in “Scratching the Surface” and ink a major deal with Nike. However, all eyes remained locked on Wilson in 2011 as he undertook his rookie season amongst the world’s elite, for those hyped as the “next best thing” haven’t always delivered in the LIVE arena.

After a slow start, Julian re-steeled himself, grabbed a win at the ASP Prime in Portugal and then took his new-found game back to the ASP World Title Series with electric performances at Jeffreys Bay, Teahupo’o, Long Island, Trestles, Hossegor, Supertubos, Ocean Beach and Pipeline. The result was a 9th place finish on the 2011 ASP World Title Rankings and the highly-coveted ASP World Tour Rookie of the Year accolade. Surfline caught up with Wilson in Hawaii to talk about his first year amongst the world’s best, where he saw ups and downs, grew and ultimately battled his Nike teammate for best of the new class. This…is their story…
