Brazil’s Igor Moraes will surf in Quarterfinal No. 4 of the ASP 3-Star Maui and Sons Arica Pro tomorrow.

EL GRINGO, Arica / Chile (Friday, Jun, 14, 2013) - The powerful waves at the reef break known as El Gringo, in Arica, Chile have been the backdrop to the ASP 3-Star Maui and Sons Arica Pro presented by Monster Energy and Sony. On Friday, surfers were greeted to barreling waves in the 4-6 foot range (1.5-2 meters), which included a 10-point ride by Manuel Selman (CHL), for the day’s highest scoring wave.

Local knowledge has given the Chilean surfers an advantage at the demanding and at times, dangerous conditions at El Gringo. Other local standouts in the competition so far have been Guillermo Satt (CHL), who also scored a 10-point ride, and Camilo Hernandez (CHL), who scored an impressive 19.15 out of a possible 20 points on Thursday by defeating Yago Dora (BRA) and Michael February (ZAF).

The Quarterfinalists have been decided at the Maui and Sons Arica Pro for the final day of competition. Last year’s event winner, Anthony Walsh (AUS) is focused on a repeat performance. Walsh had a close call by beating Carlos Goncalves (ECU) by less than half of a point in the Round of 16. The defending champ will face Yan Daberkow (BRA) in Heat 1 of the Quarterfinals.

In an all-Peruvian face-off, big wave charger Gabriel Villaran (PER) will confront fellow countryman Martin Jeri (PER) in Heat 2 of the Quarters. Manuel Selman (CHL) will try to continue his noteworthy performance against Marco Giorgi (URY) in Heat 3. And Alvaro Malpartida (PER) will be up against the youngest surfer left in the competition, sixteen year-old Igor Moraes (BRA). Moraes scored the day’s highest heat wave total of a 16.23 (out of 20) and eliminated Thiago Guimaraes (BRA) and Landon McNamara (HAW) from the competition.

After conclusion of the remaining heats of the Round of 16, an Expression Session was held at El Gringo, which saw Marcos Monteiro (BRA) come out victorious.

A champion will be crowned on Saturday and a call has been made for 8am (local time) to resume competition at the ASP 3-Star Maui and Sons Arica Pro presented by Monster Energy and Sony. The event is transmitted live on the web by clicking on www.aspsouthamerica.com
