HALEIWA, Oahu/Hawaii (Thursday, November 13, 2013) - The REEF Hawaiian Pro, event No. 1 of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing hydrated by vitaminwater®, has opted for a NO GO today due to largely closed out 15- to 20-foot surf at Haleiwa. The next call will be made at 7am tomorrow.

Extra large surf is hammering the outer reefs of Oahu’s North Shore today, but the story closer to shore at Haleiwa is one of torrid rip currents and closeout waves. Contest Director Marty Thomas watched on as competitors tested out the conditions. Barely a maneuver was possible and most athletes spent their time battling the current.

The REEF Hawaiian Pro has until November 23 to run four full days of competition. Organizers expect tomorrow will offer improved surf conditions that will allow a start. When it does get going, 128 of the world’s best surfers will compete for critical ASP Prime points and a share of $250,000. The winner of this event will take home $40,000 and an early lead on the 2013 Vans Triple Crown series ratings.

Also hitting the waves this week will be the REEF Clash of the Legends, featuring Brad Gerlach (USA); Sunny Garcia (HI); Kaipo Jaquias (HI); and Michael Ho (HI).

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing hydrated by vitaminwater® is the world’s premier series of professional surfing events that will culminate with a 2-man battle between Kelly Slater (USA) and Mick Fanning (AUS) for the 2013 men’s ASP World Title. From November 12 through December 20, on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, $960,000 in prize money and a number of highly coveted titles will be offered across three ASP sanctioned events, including the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series champion.

Each of the three events of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing has a two-week holding period within which to run, requiring 4 days of excellent surf to be completed. To find out when the event is running, log on to: www.VansTripleCrownOfSurfing.com.
